Roles & Responsibilities
Data Management: Consolidate, import, maintain, and curate Spatial Networks’ raw geospatial data assets across multiple ongoing projects into an enterprise GIS, enforcing cartographic accuracy, OGC metadata and schema standards, and facilitating accurate search of features and/or queried extraction.
Perform quality assurance and quality control (QA/QC) of geospatial data collection efforts to ensure quality and integrity of data and mobile collectors; document, recommend and/or revise QA/QC procedures as required.
Prepare, update and deliver customer specific spatial data sets and/or data analysis products on time and complete using various open source management and scripting platforms.
Create, style, edit and manage SNI’s authoritative spatial databases for publishing using OGC and ESRI web feature mapping services.
Perform routine maintenance and monitoring on server and database to ensure a consistent availability of content and services to customers and analysts. Maintain specific documentation on troubleshooting, process standard operating procedures (SOP) and best practice guidelines.
Perform analysis on SNI data to assess spatial and nonspatial patterns and drive analytical product development. Interpret results to prepare reports, graphics, and maps in support of analytical product development.
Participate in GIS team meetings, conferences, and various planning sessions as required.
Continue to pursue areas of education and professional development necessary to maintain currency and execute best practices in the performance of your role. Monitor technological advances in tradecraft and business opportunities to ensure the Company maintains an edge and leadership posture.
At various times, may be asked to work directly with the Operations director and executives to interpret and derive requirements for special projects outside of the scope of human geography and contract projects.
The GIS Data Specialist is an entry-level position and requires a minimum of 2 years’ experience with GIS technology or a degree in GIS, geography, or a related social science field.
Highly motivated and self-starting individual.
Ability to work on multiple projects simultaneously within both a team environment and individually.
Strong analytical, quantitative, and reasoning skills.
Basic knowledge of GPS and/or Cartography.
Thorough knowledge of GIS principles and practices, spatial analysis, imagery interpretation, and data collection.
Thorough knowledge of OGC standards for GIS client analytical and web publishing services.
Degree in GIS and or Geography.
Display working knowledge and experience of human geography data and analysis along with mobile data collection projects.
Proficient understanding of object relational databases to include PostgreSQL/PostGIS.
Familiarity with open-source GIS applications such as GDAL, OpenGeo Suite, and CartoDB.
Ability to conduct effective oral and written presentations within the company and to other industry professionals.
