Full-Time LIDAR technician/Research Engineering/Scientist Associate
Purpose of position To collect research grade, high resolution topographic (land and surface) and
shallow bathymetric (lake, river, or seafloor) lidar data for terrain and vegetation assessment,
geoscience exploration and rapid response for hazard assessment.
Essential functions Participate and assist in upkeep and field deployment of advanced lidar and
hyperspectral equipment, perform data processing, conduct QC and calibration in the field and in the
office. Operate the lidar and hyperspectral unit as needed on the ground and in the survey aircraft,
set up other supplemental survey equipment (e.g. GPS, Total Station, etc.), and maintain their
functionality. Assist in data analysis and workflow to streamline processes and optimize movement of
data from equipment to web portals and project deliverables. Assist supervisor and other BEG
employees associated with the lidar and imaging program in writing reports and manuscripts, periodic
reporting to sponsors, and presenting material using Microsoft Office and other such products. Train
UT staff and students in lidar data collection, as needed.
Licenses: Class “C” Operator’s Driver’s License. Applicant selected must provide a current three year
Driving Record from the current state of residence. If not currently a Texas resident, must obtain a
Texas Driver’s License within 30 days after entering Texas as a new resident.
Marginal/Incidental functions Other related functions as assigned.
Required qualifications Masters degree or Bachelors degree and two years of related experience.
Demonstrated prior field work experience in professional environments. Demonstrated strong job
completion ethics. Ability to travel and/or drive UT vehicle to conduct field work with short notice.
Ability to lift, transport and deploy field equipment in rough terrain.
. Good written and verbal communication skills.
Demonstrated ability to work safely and efficiently in the field. Ability to travel for field work inside
and outside of USA. Equivalent combination of relevant education and experience may be substituted

Preferred qualifications Masters degree in geosciences or related field, and 1 or more years of related
experience, or a Bachelors degree and three or more years of related experience. Record of academic
publications or presentations on lidar data acquisition and processing technologies. Experience using
special equipment essential to the job, including lidar, hyperspectral imaging, and other geophysical
equipment. Must be able to work well in a multidisciplinary group, but occasionally work
independently with minimal supervision. Desire to publish results in peer-reviewed professional
publications. Demonstrated ability to consistently meet deadlines on projects. Good interpersonal
skills and ability to interact with geologists and engineers. Good oral and written skills. Professional
